Pinchas Zukerman and the Orchestra of the National Arts Centre, currently on their European Tour, received a standing ovation from the German audience in Hannover for their performance of Beethoven and Mozart.

Mr. Zukerman and the musicians of the orchestra received a warm welcome to Hannover, and to the Canada Pavilion at Expo 2000, by Deputy Commissioner Carmen Sylvain. Mr. Zukerman was given the opportunity to tutor his masterclass in New York live through webcast from the Conference Centre of the Canada Pavilion and to review the teaching session the following day on the internet during a reception hosted for the members of the Canadian orchestra at the Pavilion.

The Canada Pavilion at Expo 2000 Soccer Team is champion of a Soccer Tournament organised by the employees of the Funsport Hall in Hannover, Germany. The Canada Team beat the Ireland/Croatia team two to one in the final.

International Youth Forum Against Racism
Recommendations for the UN High Commission

Dr. Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism - Status of Women), with the young participants at the official opening of the International Youth Forum Against Racism taking place at the Canada Pavilion at Expo 2000, in Hannover, Germany from August 5th to 10th, 2000. This Forum has been officially recognized by the United Nations as a satellite meeting of the August 2001 World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance to be held in South Africa. As such, the results of the meeting will feed officially into the international conference preparations and the forum report will be an officially recognized document by the United Nations. The youth will then present, for the first time ever, a position at this annual World Conference.

Fifty-five young people from around the globe are meeting at this Forum. Twenty-nine delegates from host country Canada are meeting their counterparts from Germany (10), United Kingdom (3), South Africa (2), Australia (1), Austria (2), USA (2), Antigua (1), St. Lucia (1), Guyana (1), Nicaragua (1), Brazil (1) and the Philippines (1).

Canadian Space Agency astronaut, Julie Payette, presents the Canada at Expo 2000 medal, flown during her voyage on the Space Shuttle Discovery to Robert Blair, Commissioner General for Canada at Expo 2000 under John Manley, Minister of Industry Canada and Deputy Commissioner General for Expo, Norbert Bargmann’s applause. The medal has accomplished 153 Earth orbits and travelled four million miles in 235 hours and 13 minutes during Ms. Payette’s 10 day mission which consisted in handing over some four tons of equipment and supplies to the International Space Station. The station is an example, as are international expositions, of what we can achieve through international collaboration and the sharing of knowledge, ideas and technology. The medal will be displayed in the Canada Pavilion throughout the duration of Expo. The Canada Pavilion continues to amaze the visitors of Expo 2000. To date, over half a million visitors have experienced the pavilion’s virtual river and multimedia presentation.
